Flowers That Grew Not Where They Bloom

My final project examines historical representations of Asia in the American fashion magazine Vogue. Specifically, I consider how East Asian culture was commodified and appropriated for a Western audience through the lens of high fashion. Focusing on articles from the early 20th century, my work explores the wealthy white celebration of an “Asian aesthetic” at the same moment that Asians and Asian Americans were excluded, incarcerated, and colonized through the American imperial project.
